Nest
As a founding member of our school's Nest committee, I played an instrumental role in bringing social/emotional learning and mindfulness to our students. English teachers lead regular Nest lessons throughout the school year all aimed at meeting our mission statement: The Nest Period is a safe and supportive space for students to feel a deep connection with the members of our community and share voices for making positive change.
As lead teacher, I mind the Nest making sure our lessons and materials are ready for teachers and students to build community.
My Video Yearbook club began celebrating college commitment day by setting up a green screen and recording seniors introducing themselves and stating what college they committed to. This has grown into an annual tradition and whole school celebration valued by our entire community.
Alumni Day
Each year I invite my most recent graduates to talk to my current students about college work and college life and how they can prepare for it. I also invite alumni from my journalism program to talk to my current reporters about their experiences in college, internships, and the world of work.
March at Jericho High School is satire month in my Creative Writing classes. My seniors produce comedic videos that satirize the human folly around us. The videos are curated by my JerEcho reporters and published on April 1st in the JerUh-Oh. Click on the logo to the left for some laughs.
When I took over the Video Yearbook ten years ago, the first thing I did was get students involved since they weren't previously. My crew ran with it, and transformed the project from simple recordings of school plays and dance recitals to an elaborate creative collection of original productions that highlighted our students, their spirit, and our school.
